Abstract

The study seeks to determine the prevalence of osteomyoarticular injuries in kinesiology students at the "Saint Patrick of Northern Ireland" Higher Institute of Health Sciences. Descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study. A non-probabilistic convenience sample of 100 students was selected. A questionnaire was applied to collect data on sociodemographic variables, health history, physical activity, ergonomic risk factors, stress levels and presence of osteomyoarticular injuries. The data were analyzed with descriptive and analytical statistics. The overall prevalence of osteomyoarticular injuries was 62%. No significant differences were observed by sex. The prevalence increased significantly with the year of study: First year (28%), Second year (32%), Third year (40%), Fourth year (48%). The most affected anatomical sites were: lumbar region (32%), shoulders (24%), knees (20%). A significant association was found between physical load (p < 0.01) and inadequate postures (p < 0.05) with the presence of osteomyoarticular injuries. No significant association was found between stress and osteomyoarticular injuries (p > 0.05). The prevalence of osteomyoarticular injuries in kinesiology students is moderate, especially in the last years of their degree. The anatomical sites most affected are the lumbar region, shoulders and knees. Physical load and inappropriate postures are the main risk factors. Prevention strategies focused on these aspects are required.
