About LatArXiv

LatArXiv is a multidisciplinary platform that offers a preprint service, focused on disseminating and making early versions of research works citable. LatArXiv is an open platform with the goal of spreading and achieving early positioning of research conducted mainly in the Latin American context. LatArXiv can also include preprint publications from a broader context such as the Ibero-American and from other geographical regions, but with a focus on the study of the Latin American context.

Different journals that meet the objectives of LatArXiv and wish to do so, can request a dedicated URL for their preprint contributions by acquiring a membership. Authors who wish to make a preprint article available that is not being evaluated in any of our affiliated journals can do so freely and immediately through this means. Authors have the possibility to update their works, as long as the updated content has not been published online. The contents on LatArXiv are not subject to peer review, but can receive feedback from readers.

LatArXiv preprints are created directly from the author's original files and are not modified before posting. We conduct a basic screening for plagiarism, offensive language, non-scientific, and inappropriate content, and we will exclude materials that may pose a health or security risk if identified. Beyond this screening, the files are unedited and are not peer reviewed. Please see our Policies for more information.

LatArXiv publishes original and refereeable articles, covering the following types: article, review, conference paper, data descriptor, essay, short report, case report, communication, short note, technical note or hypothesis. Other types of articles may be accepted at the discretion of the editorial team. The following are not published: editorials, discussion papers, and coursework. Papers are accepted in the following languages: Spanish, English and Portuguese.

Why LatArXiv?

At LatArXiv we encourage open access and rapid dissemination of academic content so that others can quickly evaluate and improve it. LatArXiv has the following features:

  • Multidisciplinary

We cover all research disciplines, and you can see the research categories here.

  • Open access

All preprints are published by default with a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license but any author or publisher may choose a different license if they wish. The copyright belongs to the author and they receive credit for their work.

  • Citation via Crossref DOI

Each preprint will be registered with a unique digital object identifier issued by Crossref. This makes them instantly citable and provides a permanent link to the article, even if the URL on our platform changes. New versions of preprints receive a different DOI.

  • Comment on any article

Authors can receive public or private feedback on their work from peers.

  • Simple submission process

Submitting a preprint only requires basic information, and our team of editors will help with the process and post your preprint as soon as possible.

How it Works

Publishing and financing

LatArXiv is funded by Paideia Publishing Services and much of the financial support is thanks to LatArXiv member institutions.

System and interoperability

LatArXiv uses OPS 3.4.0.8 for the integral management of the preprint editorial flow with different code customizations to improve its adaptability. You can see details of our publishing system here. Additionally, you can access the OAI URL of our server publicly.

Policies and Procedures

Open Access

LatArXiv is committed to Open Access:

- All deposited content is open and free of restrictions. It can be freely consulted from anywhere in the world, except where geopolitical restrictions on users are beyond LatArXiv's control.

- The full version of the PrePrint archive can be accessed without restrictions.

- Our website is accessible and reliable by implementing basic security measures such as SSL, reCapchta, backups, among others.

- The content we disseminate is strictly academic.

- This is NOT an academic journal, nor a journal portal, nor a library catalog, but a PrePrint repository.

- This portal favors the free use of licenses as explained below and does NOT condition the choice of licenses.

License and Copyright

LatArXiv values an open license as a form of content distribution, that's why the CC-BY license is the one that is configured by default in all submissions and the author accepts it if he/she does not declare another one in the submission process.

However, each situation is unique. Different contexts may require different distribution licenses, so in the LatArXiv environment you can choose between different distribution options.

In any case, it is the responsibility of the submitter (whether author or associate publisher) to choose the appropriate license for their content. The license chosen cannot be modified by the author once it has been defined.

Available licenses

CC BY | CC BY-SA | CC BY-NC | CC BY-NC-SA | CC BY-ND | CC BY-NC-ND

If you do not know which license to choose you can use CC-BY which is configured by default or be guided by this Creative Commons tool.

Copyright

Often, files found on publishers' websites or provided as evidence are owned by the publisher and often copyrighted and/or licensed for use by the publisher. Submissions of files with copyright statements that prohibit or impair LatArXiv's redistribution license will be rejected. If explicit permission is granted for open access redistribution, these are permitted. Users should contact our user support team if they have questions.

If you have permission from a publisher to upload content to LatArXiv, as long as you include a special copyright statement with the article, place that statement on the first page of the submission text. Copyright notices should not be included in separate metadata and will be removed.

If you have any additional questions about LatArXiv's licensing and copyright policies, please contact our user support team directly.

  • The authors keep the moral and patrimonial rights of their works granting only the non-exclusive distribution right to LatArXiv. Consequently, authors may make other independent and additional contractual agreements for the distribution of the article or text.
  • The authors accept the Creative Commons Attribution License as the default distribution license for the entire site. Additionally, they may choose a different license in the submission process for their specific submission. See more in our policies.
  • Authors are responsible for obtaining permission for dissemination in cases where the material uploaded to LatArXiv or part of it is subject to third party rights. At the moment of uploading the material, the author is the only responsible for the content he/she makes available and for the explicit or implicit permissions associated.

Authorship

At LatArXiv we understand that each discipline has its own rules regarding the authorship of a paper, so we suggest using the criteria described by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Additionally, we recommend using the CRediT taxonomy.

Any person who meets the criteria for authorship should be listed as such. It should be noted that artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT do not meet these criteria although they are powerful support tools. In any case, their use must be correctly referenced. LatArXiv will not resolve authorship disputes.

Chatbots (such as ChatGPT) should not be listed as authors, as they cannot take responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, or originality of the work. These responsibilities fall exclusively on the authors, who must carefully review and edit the results obtained. Therefore, artificial intelligence should not be listed as an author or co-author, nor should it be cited as such (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, 2023).

All authors of the manuscript must have an ORCID, ensuring transparency in authorship.

Originality

LatArXiv publishes original and refereed preprints.

LatArXiv will not accept manuscripts previously published in journals.

Plagiarism and Self-plagiarism

LatArXiv understands plagiarism as the action and effect of copying in the substance of other people's works, giving them as one's own.

For LatArXiv the self-plagiarism is produced when the author repeats part of what was previously written without the due citation.

In LatArXiv the originality is verified, if there is suspicion of plagiarism or self-plagiarism, the actions mentioned in the COPE guide will be taken into account.

Conflicts of interest

Conflicts of interest arise when authors have interests that are not fully explicit and may influence their judgment on what is published, such as financial, professional, contractual or personal relationships or situations.

Authors, editors or moderators should provide a brief explanation if they have a conflict to declare.

Funding

Information about the source(s) of funding should be provided, allowing greater transparency to readers about the research.

Data

LatArXiv encourages open access, rapid dissemination of scholarly content, along with transparency and integrity, so authors are required access to all data associated with their submission, absent legal or confidentiality restrictions in doing so.

Shared data should be discoverable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.

It is advised to respect the data sharing principles described in the FAIR Principles.

Languages

Only papers in the following languages are accepted: Spanish, English and Portuguese.

Identity of the author

All the data declared by the author, must be updated in the conventional sense: physical presence, financing, e-mail address, etc.

For LatArXiv the misrepresentation of identity or affiliation, is possible reason for immediate and permanent suspension.

Journal policies

Normally journals accept articles that were published in preprint form, however the best practice is to previously consult the journal to which you will potentially submit your proposal, review its open access policy or inquire in the Sherpa Romeo registry.

Withdrawal policy

Preprints cannot be removed once published. Once a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is registered, information about the preprint is permanently available. Several databases collect information on published preprints.

Articles can be edited or deleted up to the time they are submitted and posted. Thereafter, articles will only be removed at the discretion of the LatArXiv editors and advisory board.

LatArXiv reserves the right to remove preprints without notice.

Please note that authors may update preprints at any time and we do not consider rejection of a journal to be sufficient grounds for deletion. Preprints will not be removed to allow submission to journals and authors should check in advance whether the journal they intend to submit to accepts preprints.

Comments policy

All users of the site and LatArXiv environment who post comments must agree with our comments policy.

- We do not moderate comments prior to publication either in PDF viewer or any other active or to be activated tool, but we reserve the right to remove comments without prior notice or justification.

- The names and details of those posting comments may be public and often depend on third party integrations.

- Comments that violate our ethics policy described below will not be accepted.

- Users who violate our policies with their comments may be suspended or removed without notice.

Preservation Policy

All LatArXiv preprints are surveyed and preserved by Internet Archive Scholar, a 501(c)(3) non-profit library in the U.S., which is building a global archive of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Other projects include The Wayback Machine, archive.org, Open Library and Archive-It. This 2019 FORCE11 conference presentation provides an overview of the technical infrastructure and overall project goals.

On each preprint page you will see a link below the title with direct access to the fatcat locator via the DOI identifier.

Upon accessing the link, you may see one of the following messages on the landing page of https://scholar.archive.org/:

- Preserved and Accessible: The preprint has been processed and archived, both in metadata and PDF.

- Not Preserved: At the moment only the metadata has been processed. It is a matter of time before the PDF is uploaded but you can also contribute by downloading the PDF from LatArXiv and uploading it to the registry using the Save Paper Now! button.

- 404: Not Found: No metadata or PDF has been harvested from the preprint yet.

Version linking

LatArXiv automatically links the metadata of the preprints published in our platform with the version of the article published in the journal, thus improving the accessibility of scientific research by connecting versions. This process is done automatically when it is detected by our editors or notified by the authors and corroborated by the editors. Preprints will continue to be available on the platform, and the link to the final article will be established. The corresponding author will receive an internal notification via the server. In case the link does not appear, or authors wish to report problems or errors, they are advised to contact the support team ([email protected]). All requests will be subject to verification.

Ethics in scholarly publishing

LatArXiv adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines. While COPE is primarily used for peer-reviewed publications, many of its principles apply to the preprint editorial workflow. Among the main ones:

- Authors must accurately present the results of their research and include an objective discussion of the significance of their findings.
- Plagiarism, fabrication of data and manipulation of images, intentional provision of incorrect information, copyright infringement, inaccurate author attributions, attempts to inappropriately manipulate the selection process, failure to declare conflicts of interest, fraud, and libel are not permitted.
- Publication of submitted materials should not be unlawful.
- Manuscripts containing research conducted on humans or experimental animals should follow the Declaration of Helsinki and contain details of approval by a research ethics committee.
- Where necessary, informed consent should be obtained from research participants and authors should be able to provide a (redacted) copy of the consent form.

LatArXiv will rigorously enforce the standards listed here and those attached in terms of submission and author guidelines. Any complaints should be directed to [email protected].

Membership

In the dynamic world of academic publishing, the speed and early visibility of research findings have become key factors for authors and publishers alike. Preprint servers emerge as essential tools in this landscape, enabling the rapid dissemination of discoveries and promoting open scientific debate. However, establishing and maintaining one's infrastructure to manage preprints can be a significant challenge for publishers, both in terms of technical resources and financial investment.

Recognizing this need, LatArXiv presents a comprehensive solution that offers publishers the opportunity to join a leading platform in preprint publication, specifically designed for the academic community in Latin America and beyond. This collaboration not only removes the entry barrier for publishers wishing to expand their services but also positions them at the forefront of scientific publication, ensuring greater visibility and early citation of the works they manage.

Through an annual membership with LatArXiv, publishers gain access to a set of benefits designed to maximize the impact and efficiency of their editorial operations, from hosting and disseminating preprints to tracking the peer review process. Moreover, this collaboration enhances the digital presence of journals, improving their ability to attract high-quality contributions and foster fruitful academic exchange.

Below, we detail the benefits, obligations, and contribution structure of membership with LatArXiv, outlining how this strategic alliance facilitates publishers in expanding their reach and strengthening their editorial offerings without the prohibitive costs of developing their solutions.

Benefits

  • Publishers gain immediate access to a comprehensive preprint and data repository service, thus increasing the range of possibilities offered to their authors without the high cost and work required to set up their own server.
  • They obtain a preprint server in line with the latest trends in academic publishing.
  • Early positioning of the articles that will later be published in your journal.
  • They have their own URL where their preprint submissions can be located and shared on their portal.
  • They have the Under Revision system which notifies the status of the article in your journal.
  • By participating in the LatArXiv ecosystem, your articles and journals are more likely to receive visits and early citation thanks to the joint participation of other journals and authors.
  • They have DOIs for their preprint versions with a correct metadata identification in Crossref.
  • They have a special access to manage the articles of their section in LatArXiv.
  • Have LatArXiv branding to place on their portals and disseminate the publisher's new tool to promote their editorial practices.
  • Professional technical support and specialized maintenance of the preprint system.

Obligations

  • Upload preprints and associated metadata to the portal.
  • Adapt the preprint to LatArXiv's tipography and basic template.
