Introduction: Mercury is a pollutant of global concern due to its adverse effects on human health. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge regarding the environmental effects of mercury in dental amalgam. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was conducted at the National Directorate of the Cuban Medical Mission in Venezuela from January to June 2025. The sample consisted of 305 dentists and 150 professionals, selected using simple random probability sampling, who consented to participate in the study. A semi-structured survey was applied to collect the variables sex, years of graduation; most commonly used filling material, toxic forms of mercury, considerations regarding the complete elimination of amalgam use, and level of knowledge. Statistical validation was using the chi-square test, with a significance level of α=0.05. Results: There was a predominance of women (64.7%) and the group 6 to 10 years after graduation (46.7%), 67.3% selected resin as the most commonly used filling material, 98.0% selected direct handling of mercury without prior protection as the most toxic form, 39.3% were in moderate agreement on the total suspension of amalgam use by 2030, and 84.7% predominated in the regular level of knowledge. Conclusions: There is clear evidence of only a fair level of knowledge regarding the environmental impact of mercury from dental amalgam, leading us to infer that a lack of understanding persists concerning the subject at hand.
