Evaluation of burnout syndrome in physicians of the medical federation of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract

Introduction: Although the issue of burnout in the medical profession has long been well recognized, its prevalence, their different components and its characterization among Federated physicians of the Province of Buenos Aires are unknown. Objective: To identify the prevalence of burnout in a population of federated physicians. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) as a validated recording instrument to measure the prevalence of burnout. For one month, the questionnaire was available with access from the FEMEBA web platform. Frequency distributions of the three dimensions were calculated: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Results: 800 physicians participated. Emotional exhaustion showed a mean above the cutoff point to classify burnout (>26), depersonalization below (<9), and personal accomplishment above (<34), thus reflecting that the greatest impact was found in emotional exhaustion, followed by depersonalization, and finally the least affected was personal accomplishment. The 59% of physicians presented burnout in the emotional exhaustion dimension, 39.1% in depersonalization, and 24.9% in personal accomplishment. There were differences in relation to sex, years in the profession, and engagement in medical on-call duties in its different modalities. Conclusions: This exploratory study is relevant as an evaluation of the magnitude of the burnout problem among FEMEBA physicians, helping to determine in which dimension the problem is most prominent and how it relates to certain aspects, both modifiable and non-modifiable.

    Epidemiologist and anthropologist at FEMEBA. Professor at the Higher School of Health Sciences, UNICEN, member of the Center for Population Health Research (CISAP) at the Carlos Durand Hospital, Buenos Aires. He worked as a researcher at the National Ministry of Health in the National Directorate of Maternity and Childhood and at the Ministry of Health of the Province of Buenos Aires.
