P.A.V.O.R.A. Protocol: a methodological framework for remote detection of life in ocean worlds. Application to exoplanet K2-18 b

Abstract

This article presents the P.A.V.O.R.A. protocol (Protocol for Analysis and Verification of Organisms in Aquatic Environments), a comprehensive methodological framework for the remote detection of life on oceanic exoplanets. The protocol integrates multispectral observations, atmospheric biosignature analysis, and temporal monitoring techniques to discriminate between biological processes and abiotic sources. As a case study, we applied the protocol to K2-18 b, prioritized for its position in the habitable zone, previous detection of water vapor, and Hecatean world characteristics. The approach explicitly considers instrumental limitations and false positive scenarios, providing a robust framework for data interpretation in the next generation of space telescope missions.
