The commodification of leisure: some reflections in matter

Leisure is a vital dimension for human beings, as it is the sphere where the creation of human reality becomes effective beyond the natural realm, and, along with work, contributes to a dignified life. However, in the capitalist mode of production, leisure has been commodified. In this article, we offer reflections on this phenomenon in order to understand the fundamental mechanism that makes it possible, the main ways in which it manifests (having to pay for leisure, its contribution to the spiritual reproduction of the existing order, and the loss of leisure time), and its relationship with the social form that work has taken in capitalism.
