How social innovation may contribute to tackle the global climate crisis

Abstract

The paper examines the role of social innovation and social entrepreneurship as tools for addressing environmental challenges and finding effective solutions. Key definitions of social innovation and social entrepreneurship are explored, as well as their relationship to the climate crisis. It also highlights the experiences of local communities that have responded with technological innovations to address water and natural resource problems. It highlights the importance of considering key aspects such as diversification of interventions, integration of resources and strategies, citizen participation and accountability to achieve effective results in the fight against the climate crisis.

 

Author Biography

  • Rodrigo Barra Novoa, Andean-LAB España

    Rodrigo Barra is a PhD in Economic Sciences at Camilo José Cela University (UCJC) in Madrid. He has more than 16 years of experience in applied economics, smart specialisation strategies (S3), and the internationalisation of Triple Impact Companies. His academic career was enriched under the supervision of his doctoral thesis by Jorge Katz, a renowned economist with a PhD from Oxford University and a disciple of the Nobel Prize in Economics John Hicks (1972).

    He has complemented his training with a specialisation in economic policy for social innovation at Oxford University, as well as obtaining an Official Master's Degree in Territorial and Environmental Strategies at the Local Level from the University of Huelva, Spain, and the CMI Level 8 in Strategic Management and Leadership in the UK.

    His professional career has focused on developing economic dynamics for global markets and associative economic models, with a special emphasis on business and territorial intelligence. As a teacher, he has shared his knowledge on social innovation, applied economics, and sustainable development of indigenous communities in Latin America, teaching courses and lecturing at various academic institutions in Latin America and Europe.

    He has advised the Business Development Centres Programme in Chile, specialising in the internationalisation and scaling up of small and medium-sized companies. He has also provided technical assistance to international organisations such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the European Union, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, and various scientific and technological institutions in the Valencian Community, actively collaborating with universities, researchers, and companies.

    As a consultant in smart specialisation strategies, he offers an innovative perspective that places sustainability and decentralised governance as fundamental pillars for the competitive development of territories.
