Regulation and controversy in animal hunting in Santa Cruz, Argentina: A comparative law analysis

Hunting animals is considered a sport in some countries, including some provinces in Argentina. This activity has generated some debate in the law and in society. On the one hand, there are those who defend this activity, such as cattle ranchers, arguing that it ties up hunting tourism and that hunting is necessary to control the populations of pumas and foxes that attack their livestock. On the other hand, there are those who completely reject this activity, such as NGOs and environmentalists, who highlight the environmental impact that such practices bring about, and propose other alternatives such as ecotourism. Argentina has a large regulatory framework on animal protection and the application of criminal sanctions to those who infringe these rules, but it maintains a scheme from the old Vélez code of 1869 where animals today continue to be considered as movable property according to the civil and commercial code of the nation. This limited vision is reflected in the difficulty to integrate conservation and sustainability principles in the regulation of hunting and the protection of wildlife in Argentina.
