Morphologically differentiating closely related species can be difficult. The genus
Carpobrotus, which includes numerous globally distributed species, presents this
challenge. In northwest Spain, several studies identify only one species, Carpobrotus
edulis. However, in this work two species have been differentiated in the region and clear
guidelines for their identification are provided.
In addition, an exhaustive analysis is carried out on the expansion of these species over
the years in the area, offering detailed visual information on the advance of these invasive
plants. This analysis not only allows us to better understand the dynamics of the invasion, but also to develop more effective management and control strategies. The combination of precise identification and temporal monitoring of the distribution of Carpobrotus sp. in the northwest of Spain constitutes a crucial tool for the management of these invasive species and the protection of local biodiversity.
